Million Village, located in Mchinji District in central Malawi, has been transformed by a solar-powered water system, providing clean water access, improving sanitation, and boosting food security through solar powered irrigation.
Project summary
The need
Million Village faced severe challenges due to a lack of access to clean water. They had to walk long distances to fetch water for personal use and sanitation, and food insecurity was rampant due to inadequate irrigation for farming. These hardships impacted their daily lives, health, and overall well-being.
The solution
A 1.8 kWp solar-powered water system, in combination with 10,000 liters of water storage, was installed in Million Village. This system pumps clean water, which is distributed through an extended six taps network throughout the village.
Impact
The solar-powered water system has had a transformative impact on Million Village. Villagers now have access to clean water from taps near their homes, greatly improving daily life and sanitation. The reliable water supply has also enabled efficient irrigation in gardens behind their houses, enhancing food security at the household level. The project is benefitting 1015 people, providing them with the resources needed for a healthier and more sustainable future. This project contributes to the SDGs 2, 6, and 7.
