Namulenga Health Center, located in Mulanje District in southern Malawi, suffered significant setbacks due to Cyclone Freddy, which left the facility without electricity for over a month. This affected all operations, compromising medical care, water supply, and overall hygiene at the facility.
Project summary
The need
Before the solar power installation, Namulenga Health Center faced disruptions in its electricity, but after Cyclone Freddy power supply was completely cut off for over a month. Without power, the center struggled to store medicines and vaccines, operate medical equipment, and maintain basic hygiene standards. The situation was so dire that women were asked to bring their own water and candles when coming for delivery.
The solution
To resolve the challenges, a 6.75 kWp solar power system with a 10 kWh battery was installed at the Health Center. This system now provides stable and reliable power supply, enabling enabling higher levels of healthcare and the use of all essential medical appliances. Additionally, the solar system powers the electric water pump, ensuring better hygiene and sanitation at the facility.
Impact
Reliable electricity has enhanced medical care by ensuring the continuous functioning of medical equipment and safe storage of vaccines and medicines. Improved lighting and a stable water supply have upgraded the safety and hygiene and sanitation conditions, benefiting over 6,200 people per year. This project contributes to the SDGs 3, 6 and 7.
