The installation of a solar system at Mphanga Primary School, located in Mchinji, Central Malawi, has transformed the school environment, benefiting the children by improving water access and sanitation as well as empowering the school feeding program through year-round irrigation.
Project summary
THE NEED
Mphanga Primary School struggled with clean water access and sanitation, which affected the health and well-being of students. It was hard for the school to sustain its feeding program, due to reliance on seasonal rains. The installation of a solar system has addressed these issues.
The solution
A 4 kWp solar system was installed, powering an irrigation system that provides year-round water access. This system, with a water storage capability of 5000 liters, ensures clean water for drinking as well as sanitation and supports continuous crop cultivation.
Impact
The solar installation has improved the daily life for 1,295 students. The ability to cultivate crops year-round will boost the feeding program, contributing to better health and, resulting from this, educational outcomes for the students. This project contributes primarily to the SDG's 2, 4, 6 and 7.
