‘For a Change’ is a community school in Kwanjana Village, Thyolo, committed to improving the lives of vulnerable children through early childhood and remedial education. Previously, the school operated without electricity, limiting learning resources, teacher effectiveness, and administrative work. To improve education delivery and overall school operations, a reliable solar power system was essential.
Project summary
THE NEED
The lack of electricity affected key educational functions. Teachers could not print or prepare materials, charge laptops, or introduce digital learning. The situation also discouraged teacher retention due to unpowered staff houses, making it difficult to sustain quality education. A stable power source was urgently needed to support both classroom activities and staff welfare.
The solution
A 5.4 kWp solar power system with a 10 kWh battery was installed, supplying clean, reliable electricity to classrooms, administration offices, and teachers’ houses. This solution supports daily teaching activities and provides lighting and power for teachers at home, improving their living and working conditions.
Impact
With reliable electricity, For a Change now offers a more dynamic and effective learning environment. Teachers are better equipped to plan and deliver lessons, while powered staff houses help retain motivated educators. The overall quality of education has improved, directly contributing to SDGs 4 & 7.
