Pius XII School

Founded in 1964, Pius XII in Masikini Village, Chiradzulu District, has been nurturing boys by providing quality secondary education. Despite its long-standing contribution to national development, the school has faced serious challenges related to access to clean and safe water; undermining the learning environment and student well-being.

The need

The school has no connection to the national water supply and relies on a borehole system powered by an unreliable electric pump. Frequent water shortages disrupt daily operations, leaving toilets and showers without water and forcing students to walk long distance to fetch water from unprotected sources. This not only exposes students to waterborne diseases like cholera and dysentery but also takes away valuable learning time, negatively affecting academic performance and general health.

The solution

To address this gap, a solar-powered water system with a 3.6 kWp capacity was installed to ensure consistent, off-grid access to clean and safe water. This system now supplies critical water needs across the seminary, including for drinking, sanitation, and hygiene. The intervention promotes a healthier learning environment and reduces dependence on erratic national utilities.

Impact

The solar water solution benefits 494 people, including both students and teaching staff. Access to clean and safe water has significantly improved hygiene, reduced exposure to waterborne diseases, and allowed students to focus on their studies. The project supports better educational outcomes and well-being, directly contributing to SDGs 4, 6 & 7.
