THE NEED

The facility is connected to the national grid, but it experiences power cuts about 2–3 times per week. These outages disrupt services, especially for equipment such as X-ray machines and other medical devices that require stable electricity. Although the facility has a generator, it is too small to power all the equipment in the health center during outages. Additionally, the facility faces financial pressure.

The solution

To address these challenges, a solar power system of 11.5 kWp supported by 15 kWh battery storage was installed at the facility. The system provides a stable and reliable source of electricity, reducing dependence on the unstable national grid and the limited generator capacity.

Impact

With reliable solar power, Kirurumo Health Center can now operate critical equipment and provide healthcare services without interruptions caused by power outages. The system has improved service delivery, ensured that patients receive timely care, and reduced energy related costs, helping the facility manage its operations more sustainably. Reliable power ensures uninterrupted services across departments, supporting SDGs 3 and 7.
