Chagontha Women Farming

Changotha is a village in the Dedza District of Malawi. Like in many other places water is scarce, harvests are vulnerable and depend heavily on the rain season. Over 30 women form a united and well organized team of farmers. One challenge: the very limited access to water for irrigation.

The need

Chagontha farmers previously relied solely on seasonal rainfall, limiting them to a single annual harvest. The community faced severe water shortages during dry seasons, impacting health, hygiene, and daily activities. Addressing these water access challenges was crucial to improving both agricultural sustainability and community well-being.

The solution

A DC solar-powered water pump was installed alongside a 5,000-liter water storage system and pipework infrastructure. This setup enables year-round irrigation, allowing farmers to harvest two to three times per year. A dedicated community water point was also established, ensuring consistent access to clean drinking water.

Impact

Since the project's inception, 35 farmers can now cultivate crops throughout the year, resulting in higher yields and increased income. This shift has improved food security for the community. Over 1,600 residents now have reliable access to clean water, eliminating the need for women and children to walk long distances in search of water. The project has enhanced livelihoods by securing food production, reducing water-related hardships, and creating time for other economic and social activities. This initiative aligns with SDGs 2, 6 and 7.
