Nyangao Hospital is a key healthcare facility in the Lindi Region of Tanzania, providing essential services such as maternity care, surgery, laboratory diagnostics, and emergency treatment to surrounding communities. Reliable electricity is critical for the hospital to deliver these services effectively.
Project summary
THE NEED
The hospital has been spending about 123 million Tanzanian Shillings annually on electricity from TANESCO, diesel generators, and maintenance. This high cost places pressure on the hospital’s budget and limits resources for other healthcare needs, while power interruptions risk disrupting critical services.
The solution
To address these challenges, a 210.6 kWp solar system with 512 kWh battery storage was installed. The system reduces reliance on grid electricity and generators while providing reliable backup power for continuous hospital operations
Impact
The solar installation is already improving service delivery by ensuring uninterrupted power for key departments such as maternity, surgery, laboratories, and emergency care. It is also expected to reduce electricity costs, allowing the hospital to redirect savings toward patient care and system maintenance. Most importantly, the hospital can now provide timely and quality healthcare services powered by clean and sustainable energy, directly contributing to improved health outcomes and the advancement of Sustainable Development Goals 3, 6 and 7.
