Mnero Hospital, a key healthcare facility in the Nachingwea District of Tanzania’s Lindi Region, faced severe challenges due to unreliable electricity, impacting medical services and patient safety. The recent installation of a 16 kWp solar power system with 40 kWh battery storage has improved the hospital’s operations, enabling reliable medicine and vaccine storage, better lighting, and enhanced medical care.
Project summary
THE NEED
Before the solar power intervention, Mnero Hospital faced regular electricity outages lasting from a few hours to multiple days. These disruptions impacted medical services, including the storage of medicines and vaccines, lighting, and the operation of essential medical equipment. The lack of reliable power not only reduced the quality of care but also posed serious risks to patient safety, including fatalities in recent months
The solution
To resolve these issues, a 16 kWp solar power system linked to 40 kWh of battery storage was installed at Mnero Hospital. This system provides a stable and reliable power supply, ensuring continuous operation of medical equipment, proper storage of medicines and vaccines, and improved lighting. The project was co-funded by XYZ
Impact
The installation of the solar power system has had a transformative impact on Mnero Hospital. With a reliable power source, the hospital can now operate all medical equipment and maintain a stable water supply, significantly improving the quality of healthcare services. The dependable electricity has enhanced patient safety, reduced the risk of fatalities, and boosted the overall efficiency of the hospital. This project highlights the critical role of sustainable energy solutions in enhancing healthcare infrastructure and services in rural areas. The project is attached to SDGs 3, 6 and 7.
